Perfect Peppermint Patties
Total TimePrep: 20 min. + chilling
- 3-3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 3 tablespoons butter, softened
- 2 to 3 teaspoons peppermint extract
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup evaporated milk
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- In a large bowl, combine the first 4 ingredients. Add milk and mix well. Roll into 1-in. balls and place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Flatten with a glass to 1/4-in. thickness. Cover and freeze for 30 minutes.
- Microwave chocolate chips and shortening on high until melted; stir until smooth. Dip patties, allowing excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper; let stand until set.

We loved them! Easy and yummy — the best combination! I do them in batches, keeping the rest in the freezer. Otherwise they can be tricky. I store them in the freezer where I can get to them easily (And where they’re out of sight except for me!) My kids want to try it with darker chocolate for fun.

I love these Peppermint Patties. Here is some advice that may help.1) When rolling into balls dip your fingers into a little flour to avoid sticking to your fingertips. 2) coating the patties with the chocolate is a lot easier if you do not attempt to dip them into the chocolate but instead use a knife to spread the chocolate like frosting over both sides. Let them set on the wax paper and go back around the edges with the chocolate. I used a double boiler to keep the chocolate warm and spreadable. This does take a while but well worth the time.

These were ruby the first time. I learned not to melt the butter. The second and third time were nice and solid but sticky. I can work with that. These are amazing patties and the chocolate can be tweaked, milk or dark. I added special dark powder. Nice and rich.

Followed the recipe to the letter. First, I could not roll the candy, it was too sticky. Second, I froze the patties I did make, and when I took them out to dip in the chocolate, they thawed almost immediately, so they did not dip well. The peppermint tasted good, but they certainly are not easy to make nor do they stay firm. Won't make again, I'll just buy the York patties.

Love this simple recipe! I used nestles dark chocolate morsels. I also spray the bottom of the glass with butter spray and the candy slips right off. I am going to love adding these awesome candies to my Christmas packages!

Really tasty like store bought peppermint patties. I too found the hardest part of the recipe to be the dipping of them. I froze them as directed and as others recommended just took a few out at a time to dip. I used two forks, one to turn the patty around in the chocolate and one to push it off the other fork onto the waxed paper. They don't look perfect, but oh well, they look homemade.

I love this recipe! I just tried it last week for the first time and it came out very well. I'm making it again today. I don't know why people keep saying that they have problems dipping because mine came out perfectly...I just made sure the patties were frozen solid first.

I have been making these for several years and everyone loves them. I agree with sus_anne27, they need to go in the freezer. Now my daughter makes them for her family and it is a must every year at Christmas. I use milk chocolate for the coating since it is my favorite.
